sleepwalking

Posted by carrie on 29 Nov 2005 | Tagged as: General

i watched this crazy special over the weekend called ‘extreme sleepwalking’. it sounds pretty funny, but it explored whether it’s possible for people to commit murder while sleepwalking. it freaked me out. it’s been about 10 years since i last know for sure that i sleepwalked? walked in my sleep? but i guess i’d only know if someone saw me :)

i was about 8 and on vacation the first time anyone saw me sleepwalking. i got out of bed and stood by my grandmother saying ‘grandma! grandma!’ over and over again until she woke up and asked me what i wanted. and then i walked off and went back to sleep.

the second time i did something similiar but it was creepier. i was in college and had a single room and had gone to sleep wearing a tank top and underwear. when i woke up the next morning i had a pair of my pajama shorts on. later that morning, my RA came and asked me if i’d been drinking the night before. i told her i’d had a few beers early and then gone to bed at around 10 and she clearly didn’t believe me. apparently this is because sometime in the middle of the night, i put on my shorts, left my room (and the doors lock behind you so i must have taken my key??), gone who knows where but at some point ended up at her room which was way on the other side of the building. she’d left her door open and i walked in, stood by her bed (sound familiar?) and said ‘kelly! kelly!’ until she woke up and asked me what was going on and then i turned around and left. i did not know my RA well and her name wasn’t kelly. kelly lived right across the hall from me. i told her that i must have been sleepwalking, but i’m pretty sure she thought i was crazy or on drugs for the rest of the year.

i know it happened a few other times during college because i’d wake up and find something not as i’d left it when i’d gone to sleep – like a door open that i’d closed, or be wearing more clothes (thank goodness i’m a modest sleepwalker!) – but i don’t think it’s happened since then. they were saying on the special that it happens a lot more when you’re not getting enough sleep so i guess that would explain the college tie in. it still freaks me out though to think about walking around and having no idea that i’m doing it.

on a completely unrelated note, i just got an email newsletter from iams. the subject line is -

Like Fine Wine, Calla Mellows With Age

um, ick. comparing my dog to something that i’d drink is just gross. and weird. who the hell thought that would make dog owners happy?

thanksgiving weekend

Posted by carrie on 28 Nov 2005 | Tagged as: General

kereshmeh and stewart were nice enough to have me over for thanksgiving day. we cooked, and ate, and napped, and decorated a tree, and cleaned up. and then i went home and finally admitted that i was in fact getting a cold. sorry if i infected you guys :(

so i ended up staying in most of the break. i did play some poker friday night with jenn, robby and katie since they were right next door and saturday night i went to audrey and rodrigo’s housewarming for a few hours, but other than that calla and i just hung out at the house cleaning, organizing closets, reading and watching trashy tv :) and yes, my closets do look lovely.

i’m still coughing but hoping to have this kicked by tomorrow. i’m sick of being sick! it’s so boring.

oh and check out this excellent review of house of flying daggers on i blame the patriarchy-

Released in 2004, it stars that tiny Crouching Tiger girl with the red lipstick, Zhang Ziyi, as a hottie who can chuck a flying dagger across miles with pinpoint accuracy straight into your jugular without batting an eye. Of course, this detail is of secondary significance to her overarching sexbottish delicacy. Theoretically she can kick your ass, but, as “a rare beauty,” she is primarily an inflamer of boners, so she is necessarily and constantly the victim of attempted rape throughout the movie. Rape, in fact, appears to be the grandest of romantic gestures in this film. The rapists are the two romantic leads who love her. One of them finally kills her because he loves her so much, and then the two rapists try to kill each other.

ben folds

Posted by carrie on 23 Nov 2005 | Tagged as: General

it’s wednesday and i still haven’t posted about the ben folds concert on sunday night. it rocked (of course).

he played for a little longer than 2 hours and it was a good mix of older and newer songs. we were in the 5th row and at an angle where we could see his hands flying around the piano keys. it’s amazing that he’s even hitting the right notes.

as usual everyone was singing along the entire time, which isn’t bad, except when a really loud tone-deaf guy is right behind you. it was hard to be too annoyed though since he was obviously SO excited and knew the words to all the songs (except ‘where’s summer b?’ – ha, guess you’re too young for that one, mr. tone deaf).

however, he did ‘whoo’ very loudly during ‘brick’ and what the hell is there to ‘whoo’ about during ‘brick’? ‘whoo! your girlfriend got an abortion!’ sunni heard him from the second row on the opposite side of the stage and thought the same thing. he almost made it through ‘late’ (about elliott smith) without whooing… but sadly he couldn’t hold it in for the whole song.

pandora.com

you can create your own streaming music station and discover new artists at pandora. i’m not sure how well it’s doing with suggesting new songs that i actually like but i’ve only been listening for about 30 minutes so far.

Q: How do you decide what to play?

We take your input (artists, songs) and feedback (”I like this”, “I don’t like this”) and use the Music Genome Project to create stations that play songs that are musically similar to what you’ve told us. That’s it; only the music counts. We don’t care how popular the artist is, who’s backing them, and we don’t care which genre bin they usually belong in. Only the music matters.

i need a vacation!

Posted by carrie on 15 Nov 2005 | Tagged as: General

i need a weekend to recover from my weekend!

Thursday I went to see Jarhead at the Alamo Village with Shanna and her crew at 10, then hung out and talked to Shanna and Rachael at their place for a while til about 2.

Friday I met Tariq for happy hour at Hole in the Wall, then Christina and I went to his place to order pizza and then played a lively game of Clue when more people showed up. I had to get up to Alligator Grill to hear Jason play so I dropped Christina off at her place and got there just in time to hear Jason sing one last song. We went over to Jason’s to unload and then piled into Tabitha’s car to go close down the Longbranch Inn. Sleep around 4.

Saturday I had people over for dinner! Apparently at some point on Friday I had decided that instead of going out it would be easier for everyone to come to my house. It worked out ok for me though since Tabitha swept my floor :) We ate fajitas and queso and watched part of ‘honey i shunk the kids’ with Tab’s son before Jenn came wandering over with a drink, a plate of meat she’d just grilled, and a plan to talk the kid into helping her start a fire in her backyard. then we sat around the fire until about 1am when i decided i’d had to sleep.

sunday i gave calla a bath. and washed the dishes from saturday. that’s about it.

and then last night we went to malaga for amy’s birthday. they have the yummiest food! the scallops wrapped in serrano ham are to die for. and of course we had to stop at star bar so that amy could get her birthday shot.

i am tired.

tonight i’m just going over to jackie’s for dinner. she does want me to take a 2.5 mile walk with her. think i can make it? :)

Do not promote Fight Club. Do not build a Web site with scheduled bouts and videos of Fight Club. And do not — do not! — let Austin park police find out about Fight Club.

mike sent me this interesting airplane seating information website. now i can be even more picky about where i want to sit when i’m flying.

he also sent along this information -

Also check this one out.

It has awesome facts about vin diesal, chuck norris, and mr t.

One of the chuck norris facts is “In Texas the new death penalty is a roundhouse kick by Chuck Norris.”

You probably did not know that.

he’s right. i did not know that.

in other news… today i bowled a 119 and a 153. not so shabby.

musings on a wednesday

supercuts is scary. but the supercuts training center! and highlights! eek!

here’s some not so helpful advice from dear abby. i mean at least she’s not supporting the sister…

i went to scholtz’s to watch the election results last night, though i wasn’t sure i wanted to. it mean everyone knew that proposition 2 would pass because i mean.. we’re in texas. but travis county was 60% against (i think we were the only county in texas) so at least that was positive. as someone there said, ‘can travis county secede?’ maybe we should look into that.
i think dr. mystery summed the situation up very nicely.

kansas actually might be stupider than texas.

on a happy note, i went to the dentist today and …. NO CAVITIES! YAY!

weekend update

Posted by carrie on 07 Nov 2005 | Tagged as: General

i had a really nice relaxing weekend. i had dinner with jackie and the family on friday and my 9 year old cousin beat me at scrabble (though i was helping him!).

saturday jenn and i took her boat out for it’s last adventure before being winterized. we were out for about 3 hours. it wasn’t crowded at all which was nice. we swam around once but only for about 15 minutes since the water was freezing. of course it was about 89 so we warmed up as soon as we got back into the boat! i drove the trailer up and parked it which was new for me. unforunately i didn’t realize i’d left her lights. fortunately i mentioned something about the security system beeping so we turned around before we’d even gotten out of the no wake zone and i ran back up to turn them off :)

then we went to hang out with mel and ate pad thai and daink wine until too late. mel’s dad passed away on monday so we all got emotional and cried a lot. and it made me miss my mom.

sunday calla and i just bummed around and hung out the backyard. i did manage to make it to central market to get my free pot roast. it was yummy.

why does this girl have to be from pittsburgh??

7-11 sandwiches are getting really fancy! i’m eating a “turkey with zesty havarti cheese on walnut scallion bread with grilled onions and bacon” sandwich. it’s really yummy.

at least these people could have made his physical characteristics fit the picture they got from some fashion site.

and this is super funny “I’m looking for a cute girl who’s relaxed enough to laugh at herself, but mature enough to watch Oscar-caliber movies. ” exactly how mature do you have to be to watch “Oscar-caliber movies”? my 9 year old cousin really liked ‘lord of the rings’.

jenn sent me this interesting article about the financial benefits of staying single.

it’s going to be 90 this weekend! jenn says we’re taking the boat out. yay!

well he is on myspace….

24-year-old seeks Congress seat

“The threats began after a Web site posted information about Dauben’s initial plan to raise money for his campaign through a date auction. Dauben planned to sell his time to women for $25 a date. He later discarded the idea.

“The dating idea came about due to the fact that I’m 24, single, and I needed at least $10,000,” he said. “[I] quickly found out that what I was doing was basically prostituting myself. I don’t want to be a politician for sale.”
