i realize that all of these posts are pretty unlikely to be answered but…. a missed connection in 2001?
when you get so desperate that you’re trying to find a guy you met once at a concert over 3 years ago, you’re really running low on options.

texas sucks

Posted by carrie on 28 Jan 2005 | Tagged as: General

so last month the automatical withdrawal for my car insurance was $85.58.
my new ‘year’ started yesterday and they withdrew $100.84 for this month! (they say they sent me info about this, but either i didn’t get it or i um, threw it away?)
so i called to find out what was going on and as the guy is looking up my account, he hears jason singing in the background.

  • service guy: someone’s singing about something
  • me: yeah
  • service guy: my stepfather used to sing all the time, but i think your husband has a better voice.

  • me: (weak ha ha) (i’m not going to go into an explanation to the customer service rep about how it’s not actually my husband singing, blah blah, but this turns out to be a mistake)
  • then we talk about my account for a few minutes
  • service guy: so, your husband likes to sing?
  • me: yeah, sure
  • service guy: well, hmm, i don’t see your husband on your policy
  • me: well, see, he’s not my husband, that’s actually my boyfriend you heard
  • service guy: well…… so he doesn’t live with you?
  • me: nope, sure doesn’t.
  • service guy: (in a really suspicious voice) ok, if you’re sure he doesn’t live there, then ok.

so is this what happens when customer service people are actually proactive and try to help? i mean i appreciate the interest and all, but you’d think this guy would have several weird phone conversations like this a day due to his nosiness. actually, reading it back it doesn’t sound that weird. but it felt really awkward.
i felt so defensive, like i’d called up and told him i was married and then said ‘ha ha, i was lying to you.’
i also didn’t want to get into the explanation because jason was right beside me and i knew he’d start looking at me weird as soon as i started talking to customer service about how i didn’t have a husband. which of course he did later when i did start talking about how he wasn’t my husband. and then i had to do the whole weird, long song/husband explanation again to him. (not to say that he shouldn’t have started looking at me weird. i mean i know i would start looking at him weird if he suddenly launched into an explanation of how i wasn’t his wife.)
it was all very tiring.
and all i found out is that the only reason they raised my rates is because i live in texas. yee-haw.
guess i’ll be calling geico this weekend.

oh and later, jason and i went to dinner and when our waiter packed up our leftovers, he was all like ‘do you want one bag or two?’
why is everyone questioning the nature of my relationship???

denton craziness

Posted by carrie on 28 Jan 2005 | Tagged as: General

what is up with denton?
it seems like all these crazy stories keep coming from there.
today there’s a news item about a guy who shot a construction worker who was in a porta-potty across the street. and when they came to get him they found a bunch of homemade explosives in his house. nice.
maybe all the crazies move to denton because they’ll blend in-

Another neighbor reported seeing Todd in the yard earlier in the day hacking branches off a small fruit tree with a samurai sword. On Thursday, the tree showed numerous fresh cuts. Amos said Todd sometimes could be seen in his yard cracking a bullwhip. But he had no idea he could be dangerous, he said.

helicopters

Posted by carrie on 26 Jan 2005 | Tagged as: General

speaking of things that freak me out, there’s been a two day long discussion of helicopters on my neighborhood listserv.
i live in Brentwood and on an at least daily basis we have helicopters flying overhead very low and often circling a small area for up to 30 minutes. at least once a week it actually wakes me up in the middle of the night- like 2-4amish- and i’m a pretty heavy sleeper.
it’s one of those things that you notice and complain about but don’t really think too much about. until, that is, ALL of your neighborhood starts talking about how weird it is.
now suddenly there are all sorts of theories about what it could be. the police officer on our listserv keeps insisting that it’s people going to the heart hospital (yeah, right). other suggestions are-

  • aliens
  • infared equipment seeking people growing pot in their attics
  • some nefarious government plot
  • some weird surveillance of some specific person/activity

will we ever know?

report a litterbug

Posted by carrie on 26 Jan 2005 | Tagged as: General

is it just me or does this freak you out? what if someone decides they don’t like me and in addition to ordering hustler and advanced pyrotechnics in my name and sending 10 pizzas to my house sends my car info in to the state and says i’m littering?
“Hello, ma’am, we’ve just received a report that you threw several used condoms, 2 beer bottles and a baggie of cocaine out of your car window at 45th and Lamar. We are severely disappointed in your behavior and want you to know that we’ll be watching you from now on.”
I mean they can’t possibly charge you for anything based on some random person filling out a web form. Or can they?
Hmm, anyone want to try this on one of their evil exes and let me know what happens?
