whatever

This is my first day at work since 12-19. I also have not been out of bed before 9am since then. Today is dragging. Heather suggested that we should have a half day on our first day back and I totally agree.

I was sick over most of the break (stupid, nausea provoking Z-pack) but I still got a lot of stuff done on my list.

• I made cookies with Jenn’s help
• Sam, Mike and I had Christmas with Jackie, David, Luke, Calvin over at their place on Tuesday
• Sam and I went to Ft Worth to see his mom on Christmas Eve, have some late night Christmas Eve drinks at a great dive bar and spend time with his dad and Nancy on Christmas day
• I spent Christmas night with Audrey, Annie, Josh, Albert and Rocky down south
• I went to a party at my old house to hear Cairo stories from Gordana and Mark
• Sam and I finished up Hanukkah
• I painted the living room, dining room, and bar
• We had some people over for NYE
• I painted the guest room (no pictures yet!) - ok, Sam helped this time
• I (embarassingly) read all four of the Twilight books

And Sam and Rocky and I got to hang out and have a lot of fires.

I did not get to make split pea soup since two HEBs were out of split peas on Sunday. I did not organize the bathroom cabinets. I also did not make chex party mix. Sigh. Maybe I’ll get to some more stuff this weekend.

But BIG NEWS! My house is under contract! The closing date is set for 1-28 so everyone keep your fingers crossed!!

sam got me a new phone on saturday! it’s really supposed to be one of my Hanukkah or Christmas presents but he really had to get a new one now so i got my present a little early. sadly, my old sim card died when the sprint guy tried to move my contacts over so i’ve lost all my phone numbers. but how cool is my new phone even if i can’t call anyone from it?? it has gps! and the internet! and a full slide out keyboard!

i cannot believe it’s only 2 weeks until christmas! how did this happen??

i hope to have all the pictures from our thanksgiving trip to pittsburgh up later today.

it’s been COLD here! it SNOWED on tuesday night! SNOWED! it’s crazy. we do get snow occasionally but never this early in the winter. sam came in from getting more firewood and threw some snow at me. i was pretty surprised!

the cold seems to have brought out more deer too. i let rocky out the back door this morning and he went CRAZY. i followed him out and saw a huge deer about 3 feet from the fence. i clapped and scared both rocky and the deer. rocky just kept barking and the deer took off and tried to hide behind some trees. sam’s pretty sure that the deer could have taken the rock if there had been a fight

since going gluten-free i have really missed eating chinese food. especially dishes with breaded chunks of chicken. mmmmmm. i do love pf chang’s spicy chicken but sometimes a girl wants some variety! so last night i made spicy chinese chicken with broccoli (i used a huge chicken breast instead of the thighs) and crock pot hot and sour soup (with lots of extra vinegar and pepper flakes and a dash of hot chili oil!). we had a feast and it was GOOOOD. i don’t think anyone would even know that the fried chicken was gluten free. i can’t wait for leftovers tonight!

so i cooked beef short ribs using this recipe in the crock pot on sunday. whoa, are they fatty! tasty, but fatty. i didn’t brown the ribs because i’m lazy. that probably would have reduced the amount of fat in the crock pot so i think i’ll do it next time.

sam and i had this for dinner sunday and i refrigerated the rest. after they’d been in the fridge for a few hours, a lot of the fat formed a solid layer so i was able to just chip it off and throw it away. i’m sure i saved us several hundred (or thousands!) of calories that way.

the bonuses to the beef ribs are-
- they’re super cheap. like less than $2 a pound. i estimated that this whole recipe cost about $11 and we’re going to get at least 6 meals out of this.
- and if you have a dog and you allow that dog to eat beef bones, your dog will now have like 10 mini-bones for treats! the rock is so excited.

I’ve had a credit card with WAMU since 2001. Over the weekend, it declined at two places. I knew I couldn’t be over my $9200 limit so I emailed them to see what was up, figuring it was some technical glitch. They responded today that my account was closed. Really? Closed? How interesting since I used it last Thursday. So I called customer service and after putting me on hold for 15 minutes, the rep comes back and tells me that my account was closed on Friday because I ‘hadn’t used it enough in the last 6-12 months’ and because ‘due to the credit crisis, they were trying to minimize their exposure.’ She then suggested that if I was displeased that I could go to their website and apply for a new card!!!!! Jerks. I’ve had that card for over 7 years and never had a late payment and never gotten close to the ridiculously high credit line that they gave me.

They’ve certainly figured out a way to maximize me hating them.

i have been going to bed so early the last few nights and was starting to get worried because i didn’t think jet lag lasted that long. when we got to amsterdam we crashed early the first night but seemed ok after that. and now i’ve been back 4 days and i’m still wanting to go to sleep at like 9pm! so i just googled “jet lag” and apparently it’s usually worse when you’ve travelled west. weird. the cdc guide says it can take up to 5 days to get normalized after travelling westward. so i guess i’ll be ok tomorrow
